Most people in Kenya believe in hell. However, almost no one thinks that they are headed there. We have done such a terrible job at telling them that hell exists for people who lead the kind of lives that they do. As a TYPE of hell, God has sent an artist to paint a picture of the consequences of sin, of defiance in sin despite torment, and of God’s election.
Covid-19 is a talented painter of hell. He portrays consequence of sin on earth to show that similarly, there are consequences of sin deferred to the future in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8). If he can touch us because of sin, hell too can touch us because of sin. The major difference is that while Covid-19 comparatively is like a painting of hell, the Lake of Fire is a real furnace that burns with Sulphur (Revelation 14:10). If we practice precautions for this temporal world, we must practice them for the everlasting world to come.
Seeking after healing without demonstrating an interest in the Healer is circular. Your health will not be used to gain for you favour with Him but to bring upon yourself more consequences. Eventually, it will be too late for the process to go full circle again. Jesus' main goal was not to heal people. If that was Christ’s main goal, no one would be sick in this world today.
Jesus said in Luke 4 that there were many leprous in Israel, but Elijah was sent only to Naaman the Syrian. He was not even from the chosen tribe of Israel. Not every Christian is meant to be cured of a physical disease. And this does not make them less faithful to God than you are. In fact, better Christians than you ever will be have died and will die deaths at the hand of sickness.
Be careful not to be under the impression that disease is competing with Christ in the world. Neither should you try to create the impression that He sending the disease is a reputation that should not be attached to Him, as if this besmirches injustice onto His holiness or His love. ‘I form light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things’ (Isaiah 45:7).
You are not saving God's reputation by pretending that Covid-19 is not His doing. God does not want His reputation saved. It is God's doing. He makes the law. He determines the severity of the result of breaking the law. Insisting otherwise is impeding on His sovereignty.
Only God can understand the sinfulness of sin. He knows in His justice and holiness what consequences should be meted out and for what sins. No one, I included, who might die during this pandemic in the coming days would die undeservedly. And no one who survives it will have survived it deservedly.
The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). A wage is payment deserved for working. God will pay every worker their wages. And for those who have worked the works of the flesh, to them shall the wages be death.
These are some of the works of the flesh, which leave none innocent on the earth:
‘Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God’ - Galatians 5:19-21.
Those who work the work of the Spirit, which is to believe in the Son of God (John 6:29), God will pay the wages of the Spirit and take away from them calamity, and ultimately, death and hell. ‘If my people, which are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land’ – 2 Chronicles 7:14. ‘…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord’ (Romans 6:23).
Those who think that Christians resort to religion because they lack the competence to deal with a disaster will insist on this after the doctors have finally found relief from this monster from God. When we will say that God by His mercy gave man the ability to treat it, they will say no it was the scientists who worked hard, some atheists in fact. As if God does not use atheists.
Anyway, God will keep sending disasters proportionate to sin in the world. No matter how many cures you will find for every issue that comes up, there will never be a cure to the issue of disaster. Try as man might, they will not achieve the absence of problems. However, they will keep on building up the tower of babel trying to reach godhood without God.
They will try to heal the symptoms of sin without asking for healing for the sin. Finally, God will exhaust His common grace and come down to drown them in a fire. ‘The smoke of their torment will rise up forever’ (Revelation 14:11). Christ even told us what would happen while they would be burning in that Lake of Fire. He said that they would be cursing God as they scream and gnash their teeth.
Covid-19 is painting yet another picture to show that trouble alone does not lead man to repentance. I know of people who are literally living in hell on earth because of their sins, and they still will not give them up and repent. They want God to alleviate their agony, just as long as He doesn’t require their obedience. They want Christ as saviour, but not as Lord. They want the sin, just not the consequence.
When God sent Isaiah to the people of Israel He said, “Why should you be stricken anymore? You will revolt more and more. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment…” (Isaiah 1:6ff).
On and on God continued expressing His frustrations with Israel for their hopeless defiance in sin over obedience and repentance. Is it a wonder that Covid-19 will justify hell? For you see, creation will understand why God had to send people to the Lake of Fire. They defied God even in the face of torment.
Not only will they endure Covid-19 just to throw fists in the face of God, but will endure the Lake of Fire itself, forever, screaming in agony, and still never repenting. Trouble no matter how severe will not result in a change of heart. Not until God Himself does it for us. ‘A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh’ (Ezekiel 36:26).
Dr. John Macarthur said it this way. “I watched an evangelist the other day, pleading with people to make a decision for Christ, with music playing and constant pleading. That’s something a sinner cannot do. The sinner cannot make a decision for Christ. Christ has to make the decision for the sinner,” he said. What He was referring to was the Decretive Will of God to make this case.
In Part 7: What is the Will of God, https://www.timotheist.com/view_post.php?id=37 I addressed the Will of God in His decrees under the Decretive Will, in which I quoted that His Decretive Will is seen in the creation of the world, in the governing of future events, and in His election of both man and angels. I will let Scripture speak for itself here.
‘For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He did predestinate, them He also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified’ (Romans 8:29-30). All the three stages of salvation (Justification, sanctification and glorification) are God’s doing.
‘According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace; Wherein He hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed in Himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will’ (Ephesians 1:4-11).
‘All that the Father giveth Me shall come to Me; and him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out... And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which He hath given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day… No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent Me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day’ (John 6:37, 39 and 44).
There are many whom God has called who are not yet born again in Christ. Some God has purposed to save through this global pandemic. Those who will come to know the Lord were elected to be saved from the foundations of the world. Those who will not are in danger of proving themselves destined for hell by birth (Proverbs 16:4). Can you see the picture? The purpose for this monster cannot be understood unless we employ an eschatological perspective. He is your boat to glory!
I trust that in reading this post you shall come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is a reason God has caused you to go through this. It could be hell or heaven for you. Beyond earth, consequences of living without Christ will no longer be retributive. While you can still call upon the name of Christ the Son of God and find forgiveness with God, do it.
If you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, was born of a virgin, lived and died on the cross to shed His Blood for you and reconcile you with God; was buried and resurrected again on the third day, and that He is coming again to judge the world, you are among the elect. Ask Christ while He moves you at this moment to come into your life. ‘He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him’ (John 3:36). Now is the accepted hour (2 Corinthians 6:2).
To God be the glory.
